What is the concept SET TO MIMIC?

Set to Mimic is a set of smart kitchenware that recreates tastes and smells of your food to your preference. By placing a noninvasive transparent gel patch with a microchip on your head, the plate and glass communicates wirelessly with your brain, to make you experience a taste or smell from the past by tapping in to your memory. That way you can eat a carrot but have the impression that you're eating an ice cream or a steak, which makes it easier to lead a healthy life.

What was the inspiration behind your concept?

The idea came across my mind by observing my and other peoples’ eating habits. I was on a “no fizzy drinks diet” for about a year and started craving coke. I gazed at my glass of water and asked my friends who I was having lunch with at the time, how cool would it be to have a glass in which one can put water, but still enjoy the experience as if they would be drinking something else, maybe unhealthy sugary drinks. It was only natural to make a plate that would cater to food cravings as well.

How do you think your concept will change peoples’ lives?

Set To Mimic can help you eat and drink healthier. When you decide to eat/drink something, which you know it’s bad for your body, you only do it for the taste and smell, appealing only to the brain. So why not give the brain that experience, but feed the body right. Junk food addiction is a major problem and is the main cause for obesity and diabetes. By eating right for about a year, an overweight person can realize on it’s own that his former eating was vicious, by just looking in the mirror.

This is still one of the most unique concepts in the contest, with a provocative approach to eating. In the functionality stage, please explain more about the technology and user experience in wearing the chip. Placing something in your head is an intimate experience, how is this made comfortable and less intimidating for the user? Congratulations for winning the vote on the last round and good luck with your submission to Stage 3!

Expert feedback

This is a futuristic yet interesting idea on how to reproduce smells and taste. Maybe this can be applicable for use in other ways than just to keep a diet? When you develop the concept further, we are looking forward to hearing about hearing more about the consumer interaction and seeing more images of the concept in context of use.
