What is the concept SET TO MIMIC?

Set to Mimic is a set of smart kitchenware that recreates tastes and smells of your food to your preference. By placing a noninvasive transparent gel patch with a microchip on your head, the plate and glass communicates wirelessly with your brain, to make you experience a taste or smell from the past by tapping in to your memory. That way you can eat a carrot but have the impression that you're eating an ice cream or a steak, which makes it easier to lead a healthy life.

What was the inspiration behind your concept?

The idea came across my mind by observing my and other peoples’ eating habits. I was on a “no fizzy drinks diet” for about a year and started craving coke. I gazed at my glass of water and asked my friends who I was having lunch with at the time, how cool would it be to have a glass in which one can put water, but still enjoy the experience as if they would be drinking something else, maybe unhealthy sugary drinks. It was only natural to make a plate that would cater to food cravings as well.

How do you think your concept will change peoples’ lives?

Set To Mimic can help you eat and drink healthier. When you decide to eat/drink something, which you know it’s bad for your body, you only do it for the taste and smell, appealing only to the brain. So why not give the brain that experience, but feed the body right. Junk food addiction is a major problem and is the main cause for obesity and diabetes. By eating right for about a year, an overweight person can realize on it’s own that his former eating was vicious, by just looking in the mirror.

This is still one of the most unique concepts in the contest, with a provocative approach to eating. In the functionality stage, please explain more about the technology and user experience in wearing the chip. Placing something in your head is an intimate experience, how is this made comfortable and less intimidating for the user? Congratulations for winning the vote on the last round and good luck with your submission to Stage 3!

This is a futuristic yet interesting idea on how to reproduce smells and taste. Maybe this can be applicable for use in other ways than just to keep a diet? When you develop the concept further, we are looking forward to hearing about hearing more about the consumer interaction and seeing more images of the concept in context of use.

Family meals can help kids eat more fruits and vegetables, which, on the long term, helps them grow healthy. When it comes to preventing childhood obesity, some studies say that family meals help, while others say that they don’t make a big difference.
Unfortunately only 20% of children eat vegetables every day – demanding sausages and fish fingers instead. Kids have an aversion to eating greens. Since children in general have more sensitive taste buds than adults, they are not very fond of the taste vegetables have.
The use of SET TO MIMIC will help children associate vegetables with a taste they love, and so teach them vegetables and fruits are good for them. The 2 SET TO MIMIC head patches are noninvasive and are not a threat to our life.
Also the microchips integrated in the head patches can help you get the information about a flavor you like into the plate or glass. The first time you eat or drink something you enjoy the head patch retains this information and stores it as a new taste that can be mimicked lather.

Technology can improve our health!

Technology is now transforming medicine and it is not a bad thing. In the last decade what was once science fiction is now reality. Computer chips have been implanted in the middle ear to restore hearing, attached to the retina to restore sight loss, sensors inside the body to give doctors real time information about molecules in the bloodstream, a contraceptive microchip that you implant under your skin that delivers birth control hormones, chips in the brain to prevent seizures before they start for people with epilepsy.
It is known that every sensation that we experience is stored in the brain. Every sound, taste, smell, touch or color is being processed and memorized, even if we acknowledge it or not. So, once we have tasted or smelled something in the past, our brain is capable of reproducing it. The brain can’t associate taste and smell to something we have never eaten.
The head patch chip is designed to access those hidden memories in the brain, and immediately have them take over the chemical receptors, which are sensitive to substances taken into the mouth or inhaled through the nose. Thus, the brain no longer receives information about the food that is actually being eaten, but replays a sensation experienced in the past. So, the food will be placed in the glass/on the plate, and recognised by the matter detectors. The name will be listed on the screen. The user has to place the 2 head patches ON him, and choose from a list of products to mimic, the one that he wants to taste. After the experience is done, he can remove the chips. The same process applies when eating or drinking something for the first time. The brain makes some new connections, that are monitorised by the chips and send to the computer inside the plate/glass to be stored as a new taste that can be mimicked later.
