2 Stage - Concept Development

It is your window onto the World – feel in the air spirit of place you live in and enjoy it.

Main idea of the Atem is to provide a constant air circulation in living spaces. It is a “semi-invisible “ device that could replace current windows. It translates outside weather conditions to the interior improving them. It allows to feel in the interior like on a terrace during a perfect day – experience times of day and seasons changes. Atem connects users with places they belong to.
Atem adjust exterior air’s temperature to interior conditions regarding user’s preferences. It can change its transparency creating a shadow curtain during too sunny days. Atem’s colors also change to emphasize natural outside aura and enhance user’s experience of the world outside.
Another idea is how to use available air wisely without modifying it all the time. Atem do not clean air but evaluates its quality and decides to open wider or to close air passages. It allows to let in only better air with all values included – such as fragrances or humidity specific for a certain day.
Atem is not only a product but a system. It is made of a few independent parts.
Modular frame – created from flexible profiles allow to adjust its size to every space in a wall available.
Temperature chamber – Outside part, consists of invisible electrocurtain changing temperature of air getting inside it.
Intelligent membrane – Consists of cells with receptors that check air quality, its temperature after modification inside chamber, intensity of light and other outside features. Cells are filled with twisting fibers that enable opening and closing and change their features. Each cell reacts independently and decides how widely to open or how to change transparency or color. All visual changes looks very natural and every day Atem looks different surprising user with a new visual experience.
Control station – The device communicate with a user through a small touch screen computer that can be mounted on any part of a frame. User can check information about air features, weather and adjust a few main options. Atem can be configured by a special software and programmed to meet the requirements of user’s heath , lifestyle and personal preferences.
Personal device application – Moreover it can be controlled by a phone application and controlled from any place.

The concept and visual part have been developed quite far, with an interesting combination of sensitivity and intelligent materials and smart technology. Take use of the visual development phase to express the details of the product, it’s functionality and also the service interaction flow.

1 Stage - My concept

Atem is a breathing window panel. Its structure, like an osmosis membrane, lets the fresh air in and stops the impurities.

One of the easiest ways to breathe with a fresh air inside your house is to ventilate it as often as possible. Of course, it is not that easy in the heart of modern city – but even in the most polluted area there is always some clean air from the outside which carry smells of blossom trees. How to get only the good air from the outdoors and enjoy the real atmosphere of a windy day?
Atem would be a “window” panel which will ventilate our living space during all day when air conditions on the outside would be appropriate. Its structure, like an osmosis membrane, would let the fresh air in and stop the impurities. It would also check air’s temperature and humidity simplifying interior air’s features control. The inspiration for the ‘breathing structure’ are stomata – and the process of photosynthesis. The structure, while ‘breathing’, would also separate and catch pure nature fragrances and keep it in its cells to let it in later. As you are back home, Atem would tell you about the day and give you best air values. Thanks to storage system it would be possible to breathe with, for example, fresh sea wind air that is not only clean, but also makes your environment healthy and pleasant.

Movements of a plant

I’d like to show a video presenting very sensitive plant – Mimosa Pudica. Fact that plant can react so fast and in so organised way really fascinates me. I imagine Atem’s cells ( or rather cell’s springs, to be more accurate) can react in this way. Fast, with natural smoothness, not in a ‘technical’ way, independently. Creating them I was thinking about leaves of plants, especially flowers’ leaves, which roll themselves for a night. I like to watch time lapse movies showing how forest wakes up after night. I really like natural mechanisms of plants, how they can enlarge leaf’s surface to catch more light, how they can open and close. The movements are also amazing – precise but calm, presenting the beauty of a plant.

Resume

Another stage is almost finished. I thought it is a good time for making a resume of all the work done during previous stages. I took a look on my first submission – I thought I changed more. But actually not that much. Main idea I choose is ‘stained glass theme’. An than: opening leaves, modular object, special intelligent fabric. Now it looks way different but I can honestly say that the idea was developed, not changed :)

Shadow’s smoothness

I want to describe my key inspiration with some photos I took in a park in Graz. I really like the variety of shadows underneath different trees – especially in a city. During a hot day it’s more pleasurable to rest in a trees’ shadow: it has different intensity, different ‘density’. I can hide ourselves in a cold place under a tree but still get some sun reflections on my body. What I also like about that shadow is its smoothness. Bigger dark area in the ground is created of many levels of tiny, moving in the air leaves. Another pleasure: the movement. When a delicate wind blows leaves change their positions and looking on a ground we have a feeling that sun spots are moving in different directions, disappearing an appearing again. Its nice to see some organic shapes on the pavement, feel the nature even though I do not always look up.

Atem should give similar shadows. natural, smooth, changing. Although layers on which shadows can be created, every cell can make different darkness intensity, change its clarity and add some color saturation. It gets communicate from the outside and creates shadow where necessary.

What air actually is?

We know intuitively that after opening a window fresh air gets into our room. But how and why it works?

I want to start with some well-known facts. Air is a mixture of gases, it consists of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%) and other substances and pollution (1%). We can describe it using common physical principles referring to gases.

Is it enough to open a window to provide a constant air circulation in the interior? Yes, it is. If we are thinking about contemporary buildings with ventilation system and chimneys. And Atem would provide as big opened surface as possible.

Air movements in the outside always cause some pressure changes (and of course wind appears between different pressure areas). In some situations pressure can “pull out” some substances – and that is how ventilation works.

Nearly everything has impact on air movement. Differences in temperature, differences in chemical composition. Air which is a mixture of gases will always try to have the same density, same composition. If we are in a closed space, we change its composition by breathing. We use oxygen and produce carbon dioxide. After opening a window air would start to get the same chemical proportions again.

3D printing

I believe that 3D printing is a technology that will develop faster and faster and will change some production processes for ever. In my concept I created an intelligent membrane which is responsible for air control and visual effect. Will it be possible to use it in the future? I hope so. Observing development of new technologies we can predict what will be possible to produce in next decades. I think that 3D printing will let us make things which now seem to be impossible to make.

Unio tumidus

Unio tumidus is a mollusk, bio-indicator very important for polish reservoirs of drinking water. It is a natural receptor which controls water pollution. Why is it still important and “used” in drinking water production in the age of computers? It can reacts immediately. If only the water is too polluted, Unio tumidus would close its shell in a seconds. That animal gives quickly a clear communicate: water is not good enough for me. Mollusks are connected to special magnetic receptors that contact with a computer system in case of detecting water pollution, and that’s how system works. I wanted to use the same mechanism in my concept. Of course I will not use any organisms, but I believe technology will develop enough to imitate natural organisms’ reactions. Atem’s air pollution receptors should have a natural tolerance, recognize polluters. But when the air pollution admissible normals would be exceeded they will react immediately.

Impressionists as inspiration

I always loved french impressionists and the way they showed colors and sun reflexes. I like their works from parks, gardens and seaside. The reality is “improved’ by colors mixed on canvas, but it is how we might see world. Shadows are colorful, sun goes through trees and form smooth reflexes on the ground. Atmosphere is light and playful. If they could notice that beauty in everyday sunlight, we should notice it too and appreciate. I want to give a possibility to enjoy sunlight in our urban living spaces and feel its impressions.
